On April 8, 1778, 150 British troops and loyalists destroyed the Shark River Salt Works, which produced salt for the Continental Army. The Salt Works was located on the south side of the Shark River in what is now Belmar. They were pushed back by 15 Monmouth militia who they thought were scouts for a larger force.
